Chiltern Chiltern

An easy 15-minute drive from Rutherglen, Chiltern is distinguished by carefully preserved streetscapes with historic brick buildings and wooden verandahs. The miners' cottages, Athenaeum Museum and Dow's Pharmacy all tell the story of the early pioneers; their struggles and their joys shared by a community with the pioneer vision.

Nearby, the Chiltern Box Ironbark Forest is an ecological wonderland with an array of native flora and fauna, wildflowers, wetlands and more. Spend time enough in the forest and you will likely come across kangaroos, wallabies and echidnas - while bird lovers may be fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the rare Regent Honeyeater.

Reminders of the region's rich gold mining heritage are everywhere with numerous mine sites and other points of interest. This National Park also contains areas of archaeological, cultural and indigenous significance, with the rock paintings and interpretive trail at the nearby Yeddonba site sure to interest.

The Visitor Information Centre offers free maps of the many well-marked rides and trails, with the historic streetscape and many well-preserved buildings in the town also worth exploring by pedal power.
