Big Reds and Riverbeds
With relatively flat terrain, Rutherglen and Wahgunyah are the perfect places to explore on bike. With winemakers, cafés and characters scattered at close range at either end of the Rail Trail you will find yourself at the next cellar door before you’ve even had time to work up a sweat! And with the Murray River weaving in and out of your ride, why not plan to picnic on its banks, take a dip or simply just marvel at the magnificence of the 100-year-old gums that line it on either side.
From Rutherglen to the banks of the Murray River in Wahgunyah the rail trail is a flat-as-a-tack 9km stretch through open farmland. Pause to dangle your cycling legs in the river or detour to welcoming cellar doors and stand-out winery restaurants.
Riding with the kids? Revitalise those little legs with an old-fashioned milkshake or lunch at The Pickled Sisters Cafe before popping down to Pfeiffer Wines' historic bridge to try your luck spotting resident turtles in Sunday Creek.
