The Victoria Hotel Rutherglen scoops major cycling award in Canberra
The Victoria Hotel Rutherglen, an historic 20 bedroom hotel located in the heart of Rutherglen, was nominated for its “Cycling Concierge” programme. The programme has been specifically designed to cater to the needs of bicycle riders, in particular those taking cycling holidays. The hotel successfully hosts many cycling groups, providing good value accommodation, meals featuring local produce and a great selection of local wines. The “Cycling Concierge” offers a one stop shop with a range of services, facilities and information providing a seamless experience for today’s cyclists to ensure they get the most out of their riding holiday. Developed in response to feedback from the cycling community, owners of the Victoria Hotel, Sarah and Sean Morris have incorporated all aspects of trip planning from maps to picnics and restaurant bookings, as well as dealing with emergencies and unexpected problems that cyclists may experience. The concierge service provides a way of making life easier and encouraging bike riders to visit. Rutherglen and broader North East Victoria have recognised the emergence of the cycling market. A range of different rides is on offer, from comfortable circuits for the inexperienced rider including stops at local wineries, through to challenging road circuits for the more serious. In accepting the Award, Sarah said “I am delighted to receive the Award particularly as it recognises the many attractions that Rutherglen has to offer the cycling community”. Clayton Neil, the Cycle Tourism Officer for North East Victoria, was glowing in his praise for the Victoria Hotel’s “Cycling Concierge” programme. “What Sean and Sarah have put in place is fantastic. They have made an effort to understand what services cyclists are after and delivered it. The Award is great recognition for them and lifts the benchmark for bicycle friendly businesses in North East Victoria”.
