Morris Old Premium Liqueur Muscat named best dessert wine in the world!

In the middle of celebrating 150 years of winemaking excellence, the Morris family from Rutherglen has picked up one of the world’s most coveted winemaking awards. Morris Old Premium Liqueur Muscat has won the International Trophy for the Best Dessert Wine over £10 at the 2009 Decanter World Wine Awards announced in London in early Septmeber.

The Decanter World Wine Awards attracted more entries this year than any other wine competition in the world, cementing its position as the world's most important wine competition. The show is not only the world’s largest, but also one of the most revered, boasting a panel of highly respected international judges including the UK’s Steven Spurrier and Australia’s Huon Hooke.

The “Best of the Best” International Trophies were announced on 1 September at a gala dinner in London attended by many of the world’s winemaking elite.

Fifth generation Morris family winemaker, David Morris, attributes the wine quality to the ability to blend a range of parcels of wine, some of which date back to the 1940s and 50s. “We have a great cellar of aged, quality wines made by previous generations and this is the secret to our success – the cellar still has components of wines my grandfather made and when we blend a wine like the Old Premium Liqueur Muscat, we always have the oldest and finest components at hand.

“And some younger material always ensures the wine is fresh and delicious – this is not a museum piece, it is a drinking wine – and that is crucial to its success  We only release a limited quantity of this wine each year in order to maintain the highest quality.”
