Campbells Muscat ‘perfect’Campbells Wines are toasting their success today with the announcement that their Merchant Prince Rare Rutherglen Muscat has received a perfect score of 100 points from respected wine magazine Wine Spectator. This is the first time in the history of the magazine than an Australian wine has been awarded a perfect score, from more than 11,000 Australian wines reviewed. Wine Spectator is the most widely read wine magazine in the world with a readership of more than 2.5 million. Legendary wine columnist Harvey Steinman commented on the wine, ‘Dark amber in colour, this is complex and wonderful with exquisite balance, richness, depth and length, finishing on a note of amazing finesse and delicacy’. Owner and winemaker Colin Campbell was understandably pleased with the result. ‘We have received a lot of accolades for this wine in the past, but this is the first time we have been awarded 100 points. To get a perfect score from such a respected wine reviewer is a great endorsement’. The wine represents the pinnacle of Campbells production at Rutherglen, drawn from ancient soleras laid down by Campbells generations past. Colin commented, ‘It is really my grandfather and father who take the credit for this wine, as they are the generations that made the base wine. It’s due to their foresight that I am fortunate enough to have these incredibly old and special stocks of Muscat to work with today.’ The review is likely to create export opportunities for the family winery. Said Colin ‘Whilst we choose not to export a great deal of our wine, these results will certainly create a stir in the American market and we should see an increase in demand for our wines’. Being chairman of the Muscat of Rutherglen network the significance of the review is not lost on Colin. ‘We are only a small region, but the impact we have on the world stage as a collective is really quite profound’.
